| 1. What is MIDI and MIDI FILE? |
| MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. MIDI FILE is a musical file that contains information about how the instruments should play notes and which sounds should use. The MIDI FILE stores information about tempo, key, measure, duration of notes and others. This is in fact a digital file that stores the performance of the musician during his act of playing an instrument. |
| 2. What is the difference between Midi file FORMAT 0 and FORMAT 1? |
| Midi file format 1 stores each midi channel on a separate track (e.g. midi cannel 1 on track 1, midi channel 2 on track 2, etc.). Midi file format 0 stores all midi channels on one single track.
It is more convenient to use Midi file format 0 because its loading is faster in different players (mobile phones, synthesizers, etc.) Also you have to bear in mind that some of the players can read only midi files format 0.
Most of the computer programs can work with both file types: format 0 and format 1. |
| 3. What is General MIDI (GM)? |
| General MIDI (GM) is a standard that unifies the musical information for all devices that support that standard. General MIDI (GM) determines a special order for the musical instruments and the percussions. When a General MIDI (GM) file is loaded in a General MIDI (GM) device (a computer, a synthesizer, or a karaoke machine) the file sounds relatively the same. Of course, the quality of the sound depends on the device. Companies like Roland and Yamaha develop General MIDI (GM) into GS and XG and add new opportunities. |
| 4. Is there a program that converts an audio or a MP3 file into a midi file? |
| No, in fact there isn’t such a program. There are some softwares that pretend that they can do this, but unfortunately their abilities are too limited. To produce a midi file you need a programmer and software. The programmer inputs (by playing a musical instrument) all midi events on different midi tracks and then finalizes the file. |
